Universal Design of Learning (UDL)
Overview
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a research-based framework for designing flexible, inclusive learning environments that anticipate learner variability and reduce barriers to participation, engagement, and achievement. Rather than expecting students to adapt to a single method of instruction, UDL encourages educators to provide multiple ways for learners to engage with content, access information, and demonstrate understanding. By emphasizing learner agency, accessibility, and intentional instructional design, UDL supports equitable opportunities for all students, including those with disabilities and diverse learning needs.
This collection of resources provides educators, administrators, and instructional teams with practical tools and professional learning supports to implement UDL across educational settings. Resources include introductory overviews of UDL principles, interactive planning and reflection tools, classroom implementation examples, observation and walkthrough protocols, and guidance on learner variability, engagement, and learner agency. Together, these assets help educators design more accessible, responsive, and inclusive learning experiences that promote meaningful participation, belonging, and success for all learners.

The UDL Principle: Engagement
This session introduces educators to the Engagement principle of Universal Design for Learning by highlighting why engagement is central to effective and inclusive instruction. Viewers are guided through high-impact strategies for fostering student motivation, belonging, and classroom community. The session also features a teacher sharing her experience implementing Community Circles, offering a practical look at how intentional relationship-building routines can strengthen student connection, participation, and overall engagement.
UDL & Learner Agency
This session covers the topic of Universal Design for Learning and Learner Agency. Topics include identifying key characteristics of learner agency through personal reflection and collaborative exploration; understanding how the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) support the development of learner agency across diverse learning environments; and exploring real-world examples of learner agency in classroom practice to envision practical strategies that promote ownership, voice, and choice.
UDL & Learner Variability
This session covers Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Learner Variability and provides information on learner variability by reflecting on our own variability. During this session, Open Access examines the latest UDL 3.0 updates that emphasize learner variability and provides practical strategies to design learning environments that support variability.
UDL & Removing Barriers
This session covers Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and how remove barriers for learners. It also provides information on the UDL 3.0 Guidelines and best practices for addressing barriers in the classroom.
