Overview

This session explores how students develop flexible and meaningful strategies for multidigit addition through the instructional routine of Number Talks. Participants will examine how traditional approaches to computation can create barriers for learners when speed, memorization, and single strategies are prioritized over sensemaking and strategic thinking. Through classroom videos, student work, and teacher reflection, educators will see how Number Talks can support students in developing, sharing, comparing, and refining their own mathematical strategies in an inclusive classroom community. Grounded in Universal Design for Learning (UDL), the module highlights how multimodal representation, student choice, collaborative discussion, and strategic supports can help all learners—including students with disabilities and multilingual learners—engage deeply with mathematical ideas and develop positive mathematical identities.
