Overview

This collection helps educators and families build confidence, clarity, and collaboration around the IEP process — from the very first steps of identifying a student’s needs to creating a plan that supports meaningful learning and growth.

In the Before the IEP section, learners explore how the special education system works and what to expect along the way. You’ll find easy-to-follow guides on California’s legal timelines, family-friendly introductions to special education services, and tools to help prepare for an IEP meeting. This section is all about understanding the process, communicating effectively, and building strong partnerships between schools and families before the meeting even begins.

In the During the IEP section, the focus shifts to what happens once the team is at the table. You’ll learn how to review assessments, identify student strengths and needs, write measurable goals, and decide on supports and services — all while keeping the student at the center of every decision. Practical tools, videos, and templates show what collaborative, inclusive IEP meetings look like in action and how educators and families can work together to make sure each plan leads to real, positive outcomes for students.

Together, these sections help participants move from feeling uncertain about the IEP process to feeling empowered, informed, and ready to advocate for high-quality, student-centered supports.
