Overview

The Language, Literacy, and Dyslexia series supports the literacy development of a wide range of learners, including those with dyslexia, within the context of today’s diverse communities, families, and student populations. Course content, developed by a multidisciplinary team of teacher educators, reading researchers, and neuroscientists reflects the most current evidence-based educational practices. Courses are aligned with the California Dyslexia Guidelines and Literacy Standard 7 Teaching Performance Expectations (TPEs). Each course includes an extensive collection of relevant readings, resources, and references.

Keywords: Dyslexia and Literacy, Foundational Literacy Skills, Multilingual/English Learners, Neurodiversity, Reading

Learning objectives

  • Understand that reading difficulties, like dyslexia, exist on a continuum, ranging from mild to severe, are heterogenous with no one defining student profile, and the result of multifaceted causes
  • Discuss the evolution of the reading brain, unique features of the dyslexic brain, and the relationship between emotions and cognition
  • Describe procedures for screening, informal and formal reading assessment, and on-going progress monitoring within Multitiered Systems of Support (MTSS)
  • Recognize early markers of potential difficulties in the language and literacy development of diverse young children and be able to plan reading-related evidence-based classroom instruction and home-based supports
  • Leverage students’ knowledge of their native language in learning to read in English, integrate spoken English language proficiency with English language literacy development, and access content within California’s ELA/ELD Framework, including culturally responsive teaching practices and Universal Design for Learning
  • Understand an expanded view of foundational literacy skills that includes the contributions of all language domains (phonology, orthography, morphology, semantic and syntactic) to word recognition and fluency; describe evidence-based assessment and instruction that supports the development of each of the following foundational skills (concepts of print, alphabet knowledge, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, morphological and syntactic knowledge, decoding, word recognition, and reading fluency); and discuss the characteristics of structured literacy reading programs and multi-component reading interventions
